Nisiros
Lying comfortably halfway between Astypalaea and Symi and south of Kos, Nisiros, a nearly square sized island offers no safe anchorages, only 2 harbours, also not 100% safe! The harbours,
Palon
and
Mandraki
, both situated at the northside, are not safe in any weather. They are absolutely unusable with northwinds more than 6-7 Bft. In this weather, you better go to the anchorage of
Yali
between Nisiros and Kos.
The legend tells, that the God of the Seas, Poseidon, took a rock from Kos and threw it onto Polybotes, the giant, to kill him. This rock only hurted Polybotes and fell into the sea, where he still is, named Nisiros. Everytime, when the hurted Polybotes feels pain, the people of Nisiros notice that in form of an earthquake and an eruption of the famous
vulcano
. This vulcano was quiet for a long period, but since the beginning of the nineties, geologists have noticed seismological movements and exit of gas.
There are ferries to Piraeus, Rhodes and the other Dodecanese Islands. If you compare Nisiros to the other islands, it is also no garden Eden, but even more green than others. In the centre of the island, figs, olives, almonds and lemons grow.
